How can the body, caught in the whirlwind of perfectionist expectations, reclaim its freedom by embracing imperfection as an act of resistance?
This video-performance installation is a solo work in constant evolution, developed over several years. To date, I have created four versions of this piece between 2017 and 2020. By exploring the notions of perfectibility and virtuosity in performative art, I undertook a series of mechanical and technical rotations, synchronized with the frantic rhythms of post-rock and punk from the former Yugoslavia.
The evolution of this creation is deeply tied to my artistic journey. I continuously reshape this solo to further explore the recurring themes in my work: the critique of the perfectibility of performative bodies and the imposed virtuosity that renders them obedient and normative; the search for sustainable and ecofeminist modes of creation, celebrating recycling and composting; and a quest for inclusivity in art.
In 2018, with the third version presented at the PACT Zollverein studios, the solo took a decisive turn. It became a video-performance installation in which I pushed the limits of my physical endurance even further. I performed the solo three times in a row within the installation, filming each attempt and superimposing the footage in projection. This setup created a trio of simultaneous versions of myself, struggling to execute a choreography designed to tolerate no mistakes, attempting to adapt to a system too rigid to be performed flawlessly.
Through this struggle, I highlight the tension between the human body and the demands for perfection. By exposing my errors, I invite the audience to celebrate imperfection and question social norms, thus transforming performance into an act of resistance against the infallibility imposed by our contemporary society.
Music plays a central role in this work, drawing inspiration from Yugoslav underground post-rock and punk, with bands such as DU DU A, Margita je mrtva, and Kaznimirov Kazneni Korpus.
